Herbie Hancock is an American treasure, a gifted artist. As actors we should look to all artists for inspiration. When I listened to these words from Mr. Hancock the artist in me said YES!! We have to be true to ourselves in our art. Too many times we look to copy someone elses's talent and stifle our own experiences not valuing or deeply investigating what we bring to the table. As actors we MUST run to these experiences, not away, you must be willing to be courageous every time you go to work as an actor, explore the unknown. It is our responsibility to push the envelope, to dig and uncover all that we have to, to bring human experiences to life, not simply just life but they must be authentic and truthful. Develop your own personal sound!
